We Support ChildBirth Connections

We support Childbirth Connections, a program of teh National Partnership for Women & Families.  This evidence-based support organization was founded in 1918 and is a leading voice today for improving maternity care in the US through advocacy and transformation of the entire health care system in some very profound and compelling ways.  Of particular interest to me are their initiatives to advocate for the rights of expecting moms in every medical setting, and to protect informed consent as a core healthcare value.

Labor at Home to Reduce Cesareans Video

This video from New Yorker Magazine interviews doctors about what moms can do to avoid Cesareans, which recently became the most common major surgery in America.  According to new 2014 Arizona Department of Health Guidelines, prior Cesarean patients can labor or have their baby at home with the support of a midwife, which is called a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean).   If you want to attempt a VBAC in a hospital settting, we strongly suggest our professional monitrice services where we monitor your labor progress at home and help you decide when it is time to go the hospital, where we stay with you to support you emotionally and physically during your entire birth experience.  For more information on monitrice services of home birth VBACs, call 602-MIDWIFE (602-643-9433).

"Why Not Home" Trailer

In 2014, we heard that Jessica Moore from California wanted to create an independent film called "Why Not Home," so we jumped in to support the project, which was funded in large part by the birth community.  Nearly two years later, the movie is in final production stages and the tralier is out.  We will be screening the video in the Phoenix area within a few months.  Take a look at the trailer.

We Support "Midwives for Haiti"

Shortly after the Haitian earthquake in 2012, I became involved in Midwives for Haiti, a non-profit organization that seeks to provide prenatal and skilled birth support for all Haitian women.  At the time, several midwives I work with from Arizona and Utah travelled to Haiti, living in tents, providing compassionate midwifery care and training.  The crisis brought to our attention that even in the best of times, 75% of pregnant women in Haiti had no access to skilled pregnancy or birth care.  And now, even though the most immediate crisis is behind us, Haiti remains the most dangerous place in the western hemisphere to be pregnant and deliver a baby, so our ongoing mission is to train and fund the salaries of dozens of new skilled birth assistants each year.
